The Power of Design: Nikki Holbrook on Content Creators Unite

In this installment of Flower Buds Creative’s interview series, founder Nikki Holbrook joined host Jon Clemence on  Content Creators Unite which is a podcast dedicated to helping entrepreneurs and creators grow their businesses through thoughtful content.

Jon’s Intro: As the creative force behind Flower Buds Creative, Nikki has built her studio around one mission: to amplify the brilliance of women-led brands through approachable, impactful design. On the show, she shared her journey into branding and web design, explained why design is about so much more than “looking good,” and broke down the unique process she uses to help businesses elevate their online presence quickly and effectively.

From Fine Arts to Flower Buds Creative

Nikki’s story began with a fine arts degree from Arcadia University in Pennsylvania. Her career started in corporate design, working as a web designer for Nutrisystem and later in-house roles with other large companies. While she enjoyed the creative challenges, she eventually realized she wanted to take what she had learned in the corporate world and bring it to smaller businesses.

“Big companies have the budgets and resources to build polished, consistent brands,” Nikki explained. “But small businesses deserve that same level of quality and trust-building.”

That vision led her to launch Flower Buds Creative, a design studio dedicated to helping women entrepreneurs translate their passions into strong, authentic brands.

Why Design Matters for Small Businesses

During the conversation, Nikki highlighted a truth many entrepreneurs overlook: design builds trust.

When a website feels broken, inconsistent, or outdated, potential customers hesitate. “If a site looks janky, people start to wonder, ‘What happens if I put my credit card number in here?’” Nikki said. “Good design reassures them they’re in safe hands.”

Beyond aesthetics, user experience plays a critical role. From intuitive navigation (like the familiar mobile hamburger menu) to accessibility and ADA compliance, Nikki stressed that thoughtful design ensures a brand is both inclusive and trustworthy. In fact, she reminded listeners that businesses risk lawsuits if their sites don’t meet accessibility standards (a risk many entrepreneurs don’t realize until it’s too late).

Human Connection vs. AI

Naturally, the conversation turned to AI. Couldn’t tools like ChatGPT or AI design generators replace the need for a designer? But, Nikki doesn’t see it that way.

“AI can give you something generic, but it can’t capture your story, your values, or your mission,” she said. “What I do with clients is dig deep into the heart of their business and translate that into visuals that feel authentic. That’s something technology just can’t replicate.”

While Nikki acknowledged AI can be a helpful starting point for brainstorming, she warned against outsourcing creativity entirely. True branding, she emphasized, requires a human connection.

Subscription-Based Design: A New Model

One of the most unique aspects of Flower Buds Creative is Nikki’s subscription design service. Instead of hiring a full-time designer, growing businesses can subscribe for a flat monthly fee and request unlimited projects which are then delivered one at a time with a quick turnaround.

This model, she explained, gives clients the consistency and speed they need without the overhead of in-house staff. Social graphics, marketing materials, and smaller design needs are often completed within one to two days. “It’s about helping teams stay polished and professional while moving at the pace of their growth,” Nikki said.

Websites in a Week: How It Works

Nikki also described her signature “Website in a Week” process—a highly structured and collaborative experience that delivers a custom-built site in just five days.

The process begins with an in-depth questionnaire that uncovers brand values, ideal clients, and essential assets like logos, fonts, and photography. Each day builds on the last: homepage, interior pages, responsiveness, SEO, and final launch.

Instead of endless meetings, Nikki uses Loom video walkthroughs and Trello boards to streamline communication. Clients provide daily feedback, and Nikki implements changes overnight.

“It’s about progress over perfection,” Nikki explained. “Rather than overthinking, we get something live and then refine based on real performance.”

Beyond the Studio

When Nikki isn’t designing, she finds joy in her backyard garden, where she and her husband grow an abundance of vegetables. Cooking new recipes with fresh produce is one of their favorite pastimes… something that inspired the name Flower Buds Creative.
